Remembering Those Who Have Sacrificed…Veteran’s Memorial

Emporia, Kansas

A few days after Memorial Day, my mom and I visited the All Veterans Memorial Park in Emporia, Kansas. Since moving to Olpe, Kansas, it is a park I pass on a regular basis. Several of my family members have served in the military, so we are a family who appreciates memorials like this that choose to honor the military and remember the sacrifices that so many in the miltary have made.

The memorial has a helicopter, tank, and an anchor.

This memorial honors veterans in a variety of ways.

There are flag poles for each war that the United States has played a part.

There is a plaque with the US pledge of alliance written in braille.

Fun Fact: Veteran’s Day was started in Emporia, Kansas.

A bridge over the Cottonwood River is right next to the memorial. The bridge provides a beautiful view of the river. There is also a trail next to the bridge. We did not walk the trail on this trip, but I hope to walk the trail in the future. We saw the Unbound Gravel bike rider while we were on the bridge.

Activities

There are so many research opportunities for students when it comes to the military. If kids show an interest in the military, they can research different wars, different branches of the military, or the different technologies connected with the military. I believe that the military is an important part of society. I also believe that educators have a responsibility of educating children of the realities connected with the military.

A tip from someone who has been there.

The David Traylor Zoo is across the street. The All Veterans Memorial Park does not have enough for kids to do to take a whole day. That being said, a trip to the memorial as part of the trip to the zoo across the street would probably work well.

There is a station for bike riders with a tire pump and different tools that bike riders might need.
