Observe the Moon Night

On September 14th, I attended Observe the Moon Night at the Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center. This is an event that is promoted by NASA. There were several activities that visitors could participate in throughout the night. The highlight of my night was seeing the moon and Saturn through a telescope. Part of the event was that there were telescopes available and there were also people there who were able to help people like me focus in on the moon and Saturn. IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE!

This was my first time visiting PAROC, and I am looking forward to visiting it again in the future. PAROC has events happening throughout the year.

Activities

The organizers of the event provided the handout above to guide attendees through the different activities for the night. The following activities were on the handout.

  • Enjoy a talk on Nasa’s return to the moon by Emporia State University Planetarium Director and Space Instructor, Mark Brown.

  • Draw the details of the moon by looking through binoculars on the PAROC on the deck.

  • Take a night hike along the newly paved trail North of PAROC and learn about how animals rely on the moon .

  • Observe the moon through a telescope set up on the PAROC deck.

Resources

Moon Observation Journal- a handout to help observers of the moon track the different phases of the moon.

NASA Science Space Place- NASA’s website for kids.

A tip from someone who has been there.

I cannot overstate how helpful it was to have knowledgeable people help me use the telescope. I feel pretty confident that I would not have been able to see anything without their help focusing the telescope.
